What a free VIN check tells you (and what it doesn't)
A free VIN decode (NHTSA vPIC) shows factory details like year, make, model, engine and plant, and NHTSA shows recall campaigns. It does not show accidents, title brands, odometer history or condition: use a history report and an independent inspection for those.
| Question | Where to check |
|---|---|
| Year, make, model, engine, body | Free VIN decode: Check a Car (uses NHTSA vPIC) |
| Open safety recalls | NHTSA recall lookup by VIN; our tool lists campaigns for the model |
| Title brands (salvage, flood), odometer | History report from an NMVTIS-approved provider |
| Theft / insurance total loss | NICB VINCheck (free) |
| Current condition, prior repairs | Independent pre-purchase inspection |
A VIN check never proves a car is accident-free or in good condition.
