Used car inspection: what to check
Do a quick walk-around and test drive yourself to rule cars out, then pay an independent mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection on the one you want. Add a VIN recall check and a history report.
Yourself (15 minutes)
- VIN matches on dash, door jamb and paperwork
- Uneven panel gaps or paint color differences
- Tire wear even across the tread; matching brands
- Warning lights on start-up (all should go out)
- Test drive: straight braking, no clunks, smooth shifts, A/C and heat work
Pay a mechanic for
- Lift inspection for leaks, rust and frame damage
- Diagnostic scan for stored codes
- Brake, suspension and tire measurements
- Their opinion on upcoming maintenance costs
Paperwork
- Open recalls by VIN (NHTSA or Check a Car)
- History report from an NMVTIS provider
- Buyers Guide: “as is” or warranty (FTC)
