Dealer fees › VIN etching
VIN etching fee: do you have to pay it?
Verdict: Junk. Your VIN is already stamped in several places on the car, and DIY kits cost $10–$30. Ask for it to be removed.
What it is
The dealer engraves the vehicle identification number (VIN) into each window, pitched as a theft deterrent that makes the car harder to resell in parts. It's often sold pre-applied on the car.
Also shows up as: VIN etch, Window etching, Etch package, Theft deterrent etch, Glass etching.
What it typically costs
- Between $200 and $300 at dealers, based on Consumer Reports' experience (Consumer Reports).
- A do-it-yourself kit costs $10 to $30, and a local mechanic will charge less than the dealer (Consumer Reports).
Why it's junk
- All new cars already have the VIN stamped in multiple places, including under the hood and inside the doorjambs (Consumer Reports).
- Dealers may say they're required by law to offer it. Even if so, you're not required to buy it (Consumer Reports).
- The FTC has acted against dealers that charged for theft-protection add-ons buyers didn't agree to (FTC).
How to get it removed
- Check the addendum sticker and buyer's order for "etch" or "theft" lines.
- Decline it, even if the glass is already etched.
- If the dealer won't remove the line, ask for an equal discount on the price.
- Read the final contract before you sign: the etch line should be gone.
Copy-paste script:
"I don't want VIN etching. The VIN is already on the car, and I won't pay for it even if the windows are done. Please send me an updated out-the-door price with that line removed, and I can move forward today."
