Dealer fees › Theft protection / LoJack

Theft protection and LoJack fees: should you pay?

Verdict: Junk. It's an optional theft product that's often pre-installed and charged without being asked for. Ask for it to be removed.

What it is

A dealer-installed GPS tracker, recovery service, alarm or "theft protection" package (sometimes combined with VIN etching), often with a limited theft warranty, added to the price.

Also shows up as: Theft protection package, Theft deterrent, LoJack, GPS tracker, Anti-theft system, Vehicle recovery system.

Why it's junk

  • The FTC and Arizona alleged a dealer group slipped add-ons like theft protection onto buyers' bills and claimed they were required when they weren't (FTC).
  • FTC staff say dealers can't suggest an add-on is required when it's optional, or imply an installed option can't be removed so you must pay for it (FTC).
  • If you didn't ask for an add-on, you don't have to pay for it, even if it's already installed (Consumer Reports).

How to get it removed

  1. Look for "theft", "GPS", "tracker", "recovery" or "etch" lines on the buyer's order and addendum.
  2. Decline it, including any monthly subscription that starts after purchase.
  3. If it's installed and they won't remove the charge, ask for an equal price reduction.
  4. Ask your insurer whether it gives a discount for an anti-theft device before paying for the dealer's.

Copy-paste script:

"I didn't ask for the theft protection package and won't pay for it, even if it's installed. Please send me an updated out-the-door price with that line removed, and I can move forward today."

How TrustBuy flags it

Our free scan and the $19 report use the same rules as this page: a theft protection / lojack line is marked Junk (ask for it to be removed). Rule note: Optional theft-recovery product; often pre-installed and charged without being asked for. VINs are already stamped on the car; DIY etch kits cost about $10–$30.

FAQ

Is dealer theft protection worth it?

Rarely at dealer prices. It's optional, and if you want tracking you can compare stand-alone products and your insurer's discounts after you buy.

The tracker is already installed. Do I have to pay?

No. FTC staff say dealers can't imply an installed option can't be removed and must be paid for. Ask for the charge to be removed or the price reduced.

Is theft protection the same as VIN etching?

Sometimes they're bundled. See our VIN etching guide; both are optional.
