The dealer documentation fee, explained
A doc fee is what a dealer charges for preparing the sale paperwork. It isn't a government fee. Some states cap it (for example California and New York); in most, the dealer sets it, and you negotiate the total out-the-door price instead.
States with a verified cap
- California: $85 (source)
- Maryland: $800 (source)
- Michigan: $280 (source)
- New York: $175 (source)
- Washington: $200 (source)

How to handle it
- Ask for the doc fee amount up front, in the itemized out-the-door quote.
- If it can't be removed, ask for the same amount off the price instead.
- Compare out-the-door totals between dealers, not prices before fees.
